Mahatma Gandhi, lovingly called as "Father of the Nation" by the Indians was assassinated on 30th Jan, 1948 while proceeding to join the inter-relegious Prayer at the Brila House, New Delhi. Soon after this historic vacuum an appeal was issued to the public for funds to build suitable memorial to Gandhiji. The rich and the poor vied with each other in contributing their mite and on that basis the Gandhi Memorial Trust (Gandhi Smarak Nidhi), New Dehil came into existence.
